Serving Stoney Creek and the greater Hamilton area.
Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational corporation headquartered in California. Started in 1924, Toastmasters' mission has been to improve communication and leadership skills in its members through a long-standing proven system that focuses on members' public speaking skills. All Toastmasters members belong to one or more clubs. Clubs consist of at least eight members and may have up to about forty members. There are, at present, over 8,000 clubs around the world. For more information about the history of the Toastmasters organization and programs, go to the Toastmasters International web site. The name "Toastmasters" is a holdover from the founding of the organization, when one of the main types of public speaking a member of society would engage in was after-dinner speaking, a.k.a. toastmastering. It is rare that formal drinking and toasts take place at today's Toastmaster meeting but the name is a link to our past. Why should I look into Toastmasters? Everyone is afraid of speaking. You are no different. Remember that EVERYONE in a Toastmasters club is there because at some point they realized they needed help communicating and speaking before audiences. You may be surprised to find out how supportive a Toastmasters club really can be. If you're aware of how nervous you are but aren't convinced that you should do anything about it, stop and think, what skill is more important than any other when it comes to getting and keeping a good job? Stoney Creek Toastmasters strives to provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment, where members have the opportunity to develop communication and leadership skills, fostering self-confidence and personal growth. How often do you meet? Stoney Creek Toastmasters meets every Thursday evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Optimist Club, Queenston Road from early September to mid June. How much does membership cost? The membership fee is $140.00 per year plus a one time initiation fee of $40 which includes your basic manual outlining 10 speech projects, a Members' Handbook, subscription to the Toastmasters Magazine, and the opportunity to participate in all phases of weekly meetings. Joining in midterm will have the dues reduced proportionately. How do I proceed once I have my manuals? You decide how quickly or slowly you want to work your way through the manual. Everyone works at his or her own speed. Speeches may be about any subject you wish although Toastmasters encourages members to choose subjects appropriate and appealing to all audiences. Upon completion of all 10 speeches, you will earn the coveted Competent Toastmaster Award (CTM). Are there other manuals as well? Yes. Upon completion of your CTM, you can choose to complete any of the specialized Toastmaster Manuals (Storytelling, Management, Humorous, Interpretive Reading, Sales presentations, etc.). Toastmasters International will, at your request, send a congratulatory letter to your employer as you reach each new level of achievement. What happens at a meeting? The format may vary slightly but the basics include: * Introduction by the Chairperson who presides over the program that evening. * Impromptu speeches from members (also known as Table Topics) * The business meeting (usually very brief - Parliamentary procedures are practiced here) * Introduction of the Toastmaster for the evening * Prepared speeches from members * Introduction of the General Evaluator * Oral evaluations of the prepared speeches * Reports from other evaluation personnel, such as timer, grammarian, General Evaluator What other opportunities does Stoney Creek Toastmasters offer? A typical Toastmaster evening includes many opportunities to build your abilities and confidence. At different meetings, you will learn to evaluate others verbally, give impromptu speeches, propose toasts, participate in business sessions and even lead meetings. Stoney Creek Toastmasters tries to make each meeting different and exciting! In addition, we have regular district and regional contests in different categories throughout the year. Wouldn't you like to become "Toastmaster of the Year"? Do I have to attend every meeting? Attendance is voluntary to all meetings. Many of our members cannot attend every meeting, however, consistent attendance adds to the learning experience. The more you participate, the greater the benefit you will receive. May I bring a guest myself? Certainly! Guests are always welcome. A friendly and supportive environment will build your confidence and improve your speaking and leadership skills. If you still don't know whether you'd like Toastmasters, why not visit a Stoney Creek Toastmasters meeting to see what it is like? Please drop us a note if you plan to come out to this weeks' meeting and we would love to welcome you at the door. If after the meeting you still don't think it's for you, we'll still be happy that you came by. We welcome you to Stoney Creek Toastmasters and hope to see you as a guest and a member. All About Toastmasters At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up of 20 to 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice: Conducting meetings. Meetings usually begin with a short business session, which helps members learn basic meeting procedures. Giving impromptu speeches. Members present one-to two-minute impromptu speeches on assigned topics. Presenting prepared speeches. Offering constructive evaluation. Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who points out speech strengths and offers suggestions for improvement. The Tools You Use. Upon joining a Toastmasters club, each new member receives a variety of manuals and resources on speaking. Members also have access to other books as well as audio and videocassettes on speaking and leading. They also receive the award-winning The Toastmaster, a monthly magazine that offers the latest insights on speaking and leadership techniques. Toastmasters and Leadership. Leadership cannot be learned in a day. It takes practice. In Toastmasters members build leadership skills by organizing and conducting meetings and motivating others to help them. Club leadership roles and a leadership development program also offer opportunities to learn and practice. Just as Toastmasters members learn to speak simply by speaking, they learn leadership by leading. Company Benefits. A company's success also depends on communication. Employees face an endless exchange of ideas, messages, and information as they deal with one another and with customers day after day. How well they communicate can determine whether a company quickly grows into an industry leader or joins thousands of other businesses mired in mediocrity. Toastmasters provide the tools that enable employees to become effective communicators and leaders all at a very low cost. A toastmaster training helps employees: Give better sales presen Hone their management skills Work better with fellow employees Effectively develop and present ideas Offer constructive criticism. Accept criticism more objectively. Around the world more than three million men and women of all ages and occupations have benefited from Toastmasters training, and more than one thousand corporations, community groups, universities, associations, and government agencies now use Toastmasters training. Community Benefits. Toastmasters has helped many members in their community service activities. Using the speaking and leadership skills developed in Toastmasters, people have become more active in business, churches, and service and charity organizations. Toastmasters members are able to organize activities, conduct meetings, and speak in public as their organization's representative. Some even become active in local, state or national government. Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. The first Toastmasters club was established on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California, by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, who conceived and developed the idea of helping others to speak more effectively. More clubs were formed, and Toastmasters International was incorporated under California law on December 19, 1932. Toastmasters International's business and services are administered by its World Headquarters, located in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. It employs no paid promoters or instructors. It has no salaried staff except the Executive Director and World Headquarters staff, which provides services to the clubs and Districts The names "Toastmasters International," "Toastmasters," and the Toastmasters International | ||
"It's an honor and a privilege" to be able to serve as the Club President this year. What makes it so easy is that this just happens to be a very good Toastmasters club. Tucked away in a park-like setting, it's easy to miss, but it really shouldn't be as it offers the community a treasure of talent and talent-building resources.
On my initial visit to check out Stoney Creek Toastmasters, I saw and heard a man who looked like he had just arrived from a construction site, but who proceeded to speak like Winston Churchill. I later found out, the speaker had been a Senior Executive coach for a large corporation. And this individual is one of many at Stoney Creek Toastmasters who continue to surprise, inspire and encourage me, fellow members, and guests alike.
Listen to the Florist who has a gift of providing feedback that drives you to a higher level of speaking ability. And the club comedian ever at the ready with a quip, and a humorous story. Or the man who every time he speaks, can't help but teach and delight to the intense satisfaction of all.
And this is just the tip, or shall I say, here's a tip. I've discovered at Stoney Creek Toastmasters that everyone has a hidden mine of speaking talent waiting to come out. Some have harnessed it, some are in the process of harnessing it, and a few seem to have it without much effort all, but no matter, all of us are polishing it to shine more brightly.
Don't miss this Stoney Creek treasure. Do yourself a favor. Let your speaking voice find itself confidently and easily at Stoney Creek Toastmasters. I'm glad I did.
